for Gifted Reading Students
Grade 5
This reading packet was initially designed based on the conversation that we had on 12/14/04,
How will we use the book?
Decisions were:
* Character Development
* Point of View through discussion and writing activities
* Theme
* Cause and Effect
* Connect cause and effect with the history section on the progress report and the importance of historical events in daily lives (Learning Results).
Other Decisions included:
* Tiering,
* Use of Graphic Organizers
* Leveled Questions
Packet Set-Up:
* Chapters are grouped like Novel Ties.
* Novel Ties pages are sited as (NT) but are not copied for this packet.
* Chapter Plans include: materials, focus areas, purpose for reading, independent activities, a social studies connection or notes section, discussion questions and on-going activities.
* Questions in the Discussion Questions section are meant for discussing not writing except for one area (is noted on the chapter plans.). All oral response should include evidence from the text.
* Independent Activities section, other than vocabulary, should be used after the chapters have been read.
* Independent Activities section can also be used as small group activities.
* On-Going Activities section activities keep the graphic organizers going over the course of the novel and can be done whenever (independent work time once introduced).
* The Social Studies Connection section is pretty limited; I’d like any input you may have as you teach the novel in conjunction with the social studies curriculum to add later.
* NOT ALL GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS HAVE THE EXACT AMOUNT OF REQUIRED SPACES; SOME MAY HAVE TOO MANY, SOME MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH.
* Please share anything that you’ve created that others could benefit from and I’ll add it to OUR packet.
