Introduction![]() The everyday occurrences of
motion that we take for granted are part of a scientific
study called physics. The study of motion began with
English scientist and mathematician Sir
Isaac Newton (1661-1696). Newton was interested in
all aspects of physical science, particularly the
principles of gravity, astronomy and motion. He is famous
for expelling and naming the laws of motion that occur in
everyday life. It's up to you to learn about Newton's
three laws and to create a simple machine that
demonstrates an understanding of these principles. * Research the three Laws
of Motion and be able to demonstrate each *Create a Mousetrap Hot Rod. Below are some guidelines to building your machine *Write a brochure to turn in along with your car 1. With a partner, read about the laws of motion and do three activities to demonstrate each from the attached list. 2. Design a car using a mousetrap a. The car must be propelled forward by using the potential energy of the spring b. The wooden base of the mouse trap may not be altered in any way except to add the axles or to remove the spring lever. All pieces except the spring lever must stay in tact. c. No rat traps!!! d. Additions or extensions may be added on to your vehicle 3. Write a brochure explaining how you car works. 4. Write a conclusion - what have you learned? Refer to the attached list of motion
sites or do your own search to gain an understanding
of the laws of motion you will demonstrate. You will also
find information in the library. In your brochure include: 1. A detailed sketch or description of your design 2. A written explanation of how each of Newton's three laws of motion apply to your car and how you can prove them using your hot rod 3. A conclusion.What you have learned from doing this project? How do Newton's Laws apply to your daily life? Refer to the preliminary activities you did using Newton's Laws. |
