Backing up Files and using Drop Boxes
You are able to get to your network folders that you have used in the lower grades from your iBook. This will allow you to save your work securely with backed up copies in the event that your laptop fails and needs to be reimaged. Follow these steps:
Part 1 - Backing up Files on the Network
1. Get to your desktop so that Finder appears in the upper left corner.
2. Click on Go and select Connect to Server - or use Apple+K as a shortcut.
3. In the Server Address line that pops up, type manw01 - that's zero and one at the end - then click Connect.
4. In the Name line of the next window type in your network name - the one you would use in the computer lab to login on a PC.
5. In the Password line use the network password you were given at school - the one you would use in the computer lab to login on a PC.
6. Check the box next to "Remember password in keychain", then click on Connect.
7. In the next screen, click on Students and OK. (If you don't get this screen see Mr. Koelker.)
8. A window will open with a folder labeled with your year of graduation. Move this window so that you can see your desktop. Find the silver globe labeled STUDENTS and click once on it. Then go the work File and choose Make Alias. This will place another silver globe on your desktop that will be your shortcut so you won't have to do all of this next time. You can drag that Alias down into your dock on the right.
9. Now, double click on the folder for your year of graduation, then on your network name folder. You will see your old files. Select all of these and throw them in the trash, or make a folder called Old Stuff and put them in there if you want to save them.
10. Drag any documents you have made on your laptop into your network folder and you will have a copy there for backup. Do this each time you make a new document from now on.
Part 2 - Using Drop Boxes
1. You need to repeat the first 6 steps from above to connect to another folder on the network for Drop Boxes.
2. Once you have entered connected to the network, click on APPS in the next window and click OK.
3. Next, double click the folder called Utils. Then double click on Curriculum, then on your grade level folder.
4. You will see folders for your grade level teachers. Open one and you will see 2 more folders, one called Drop Box and one called Handout - Drag and Drop.
5. You may turn in work to that teacher by dragging it from your desktop into the Drop Box. Once you do so, you will not be able to get it back out, but your teacher will.
6. You can open the Handout folder to get a document the teacher wants to handout to the class. DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK THE DOCUMENT IN THE FOLDER. DRAG IT ONTO YOUR DESKTOP AND DROP IT THERE.
Naming Files for Drop Boxes
When you pass in a file to your teacher's drop box, be sure to name it correctly. Begin with your LAST NAME then add a short description of the assignment. For example, Jon Stewart's newspaper assignment would be named Stewart-newspaper.
